MARIE HULSENS - RECORDERS AND ONE-HAND PIPES
I've been making recorders and pipes for over 10 years. I learnt this job with my father, a recorder maker since 1975.
You will find here a short description of my instruments.
My father and I make Renaissance and Baroque recorders after originals. They are perfect for professional musicians, but also for amateurs who want to play good quality instruments.
We travel around Europe with our instruments and show them during international early music exhibitions (Germany, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, The Netherlands, France,...).
Lately, I have learnt a lot about the musical traditions of the Pyrenees, and this led me to the one-hand pipes.
I met a one-hand pipe and psalterium researcher and maker, who lives in Bearn. This man has measured a lot of instruments from his area and now reproduces them. He works with a special care in order to maintain playing, manufacturing and sound specificities.
He generously taught me everything he knew about one-hand pipe making.
Now I also make other types of one-hand pipes, which are played around the Pyrenees mountains.(other musical traditions, other tunings). Thus I can meet the needs of most musicians.
You will also find here a variety of recorders made especially for folk-music players. These instruments are sonorous, chromatic and tuned in a modern way.
Xavier Vidal, a Frensh musician and ethnomusicologist, asked me to make a copy of a French whistle, which people play in Quercy. It's an instrument with obvious fingering, on
which European folk tunes can be played easily.
